This is the last vintage taken from the famous Wendouree Mataro block in the Clare Valley and planted in the Greenstone vineyard located 45km north of Heathcote. Making this wine is all about laissez faire winemaking; I wanted to capture the purity of Mourvèdre fruit without the dense, rich structure that it is famous for.

Mourvèdre has a reputation to be big and rich with severe tannins. However, I make this wine very delicately with no pumping or plunging in an effort not to over extract. The whole bunch also softens the tannins, which results in a more savoury delicate style of Mourvèdre, which allows it to be paired well with cured meats, pates, and terrines. It also pairs well with slow cooked meats or long slow braises, think veal ragu with rosemary and thyme.

About Syrahmi Wines

The name Syrahmi is a made up from “Syrah” the French word for Shiraz and “Ami” meaning friend. The idea being a “friendly Shiraz” or “A friend of Shiraz”. Syrahmi began in 2004 when Adam Foster gave up his day job as a Chef to pursue his dream of becoming a wine maker. He purchased his first tonne and a half of grapes from Heathcote winery and the dream was born.

Each year grapes for Syrahmi are sourced and selected from different vineyards in the Heathcote region. Thus each year the wines are given a different name to reflect the vintage.

Currently under the Syrahmi label, Foster makes Shiraz, Grenache & Mouvedre.
