Vi d’Altura, the equivalent of Grand Cru. High in the Montsant ranges, the Manyes vineyard is located at the remarkable altitude of 800 metres (the highest in Priorat). This cool, north-facing site is only 1.4 hectares, and the vines are now about 55 years old. While Les Tosses is planted to Carignan on pure llicorella slate, Les Manyes is predominantly clay with elements of quartz and limestone and is planted almost exclusively to Grenache. It produces a Priorat Grenache like no other—if we had to put forward a single bottling that symbolises the unique wines of Dominik Huber, this would be it. This year Huber told us that the Grenache here is actually Garnatxa Peluda, a mutation of Grenache Noir producing smaller, thicker-skinned berries with higher acidity and less alcohol. Perhaps this is a key to the wine’s beguiling personality. Regardless, it is the antithesis of Priorat’s blockbuster image with the intensity, finesse and transparency of a great Grand Cru Burgundy.

Huber ferments this cuvée with 100% whole bunches and indigenous yeasts and, as of the 2016 vintage, the wine has no contact with wood. Again, it is expensive, but we’re talking about one of Spain’s greatest reds, with a price tag that remains about one-third of its closest Priorat competitor.

About Terroir al Límit Wines

Dominik discovers his talent and passion for Mediterranean wine and culinary arts at a rather early stage: at the age of eighteen he visits an old Ligurian Trattoria; one year later he goes on a gourmet trip through Italy, alongside German top chef Karl Ederer, that takes him to various first-class traditional restaurants.

At 27, he starts studying Economics and Marketing in London, Munich and Madrid. In 1996, while still at university, he completes his first internship at the Mas Martinet winery owned by the Perez family – situated in the Priorat, one of the two oldest wine growing regions in Catalonia.
Enthused by his experiences and insights he takes on another internship at the Perez family after graduation in the year 2000 and gets employment as a labourer for a full year. In that time, Dominik encounters Eben Sadie, a highly regarded enologist from South Africa. They become friends and return to the Perez family in 2001 to help harvest the fruit.

Terroir al Limit is our flagship range, deeply inspired by the very old winemaking traditions of Burgundy. Dominik has fully embraced a biodynamic approach to viticulture, coupled with a gentle, non-intrusive winemaking style that favors whole-bunch fermentation, and concrete or amphora aging as an alternative to oak. Carefully selected plots of Garnacha and Carignan are individually expressed through a collection of site-specific wines with a timeless elegance that has become the hallmark of their style.

The wines of Terroir Historic are meant to be enjoyed, rather than contemplated. Nostalgic and honest in spirit, these wines reflect back on the rhythm of life in the Priorat of the 1970’s, as well as the style of winemaking that was popular in that time. Rather than focusing on individual parcels, Dominik sources grapes from many different vineyards throughout the region. These complex blends – dazzling mosaics of aroma and flavor – authentically express the diversity of the Priorat landscape.

Terroir al Límit fits into a distinctly Mediterranean context. Our ancient culture and terroir are consequences of the Mediterranean climate. Our wines are produced with gastronomy in mind. They shine brightest when enjoyed with family and friends, as part of the lifestyle of southern Europe. To pair with a healthy Mediterranean diet – known for dishes that are pure and authentic in flavor – our wines must be light and transparent. Nothing should mask the true character of the soils: not the oak, not the extraction, not the over-ripeness of the grapes. Only pure, mineral-rich fruit is used.
We believe real food needs real wine. And wine should be made from healthy, lively grapes without any manipulation or additives, and with no other purpose than that of expressing the authentic emotion and true character of the place. Each successive vintage is a testament to their original vision for Terroir al Límit, as well as to Dominik’s continued quest to make the most elegant and expressive wines in the Priorat.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
