The 25 words or less version: The first Tonic Grenache solely from McLaren Vale. That said, it’s got all the hallmarks of a Tonic Grenache — Cherry-red, amaro-like sweetness, and fine but firm tannic flow-through. Ding-ding.

The GB version: Believe it or not, this is the first Tonic Grenache solely from McLaren Vale, with fruit from a 90-odd-year-old vineyard in Blewitt Springs, feet firmly in the sand. We made this wine using 20% whole bunch and 80% not. A no-brainer, really.

Tannin is certainly at the forefront of this wine, though kept completely in check with fragrant red fruits, cherries soaked in liqueur and an aromatic dried spice lift. There’s an almost hazelnut savoury element to the wine and a fine but firm tannic flow-through. It’s bright and crunchy throughout and very long in flavour. Good stuff.

About Tonic Wines

Tonic Wines is Glenn Barry – a small batch winemaker crafting high quality wines from curated sites in the Barossa, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale and beyond. On a quest for truth in flavour, Glenn leans on the grapes themselves for guidance from vintage to vintage – a process he likes to call ‘benign neglect’.

Predominantly organic and with a sensitive but pragmatic approach in winemaking style, these regionally expressive wines include a Chardonnay, Grenache, Mataro, Malbec and Shiraz, with an accompanying limited release Reserve run.

The name ‘Tonic’ offers a respectful nod to the apothecaries, spice merchants, botanists and dark arts healers of yesteryear – master craftspeople steeped in history. Bold and courageous. Nourishing and healing and their own rather special ways.
