In the glass this rosé shows the palest pink/salmon colour. The bouquet is lifted, with floral and citrus notes of mandarin, grapefruit and blossom. Green apple and herbal notes increase complexity and blend perfectly to an intense minerality. The palate is incredibly juicy and fresh.

This wine is bone dry, but the time on lees gave it a textural sweetness and creaminess that together with the finest tannins, gives roundness and flesh. Notes of blood orange, minerals and herbs define the palate. Delicious.

Hand harvested at sunrise on the 8th of March from the Gnadenfrei North contours, the fruit was immediately de-stemmed and pressed to tank. The juice was chilled and left to settle over 48 hours before racking and inoculation. Fermentation was cold and long, aimed at preservation of the delicate floral aromatics of this wine.

After a month, the wine was dry and ready to be coarsely racked before winter sur-lie aging. In August the wine was filtered and bottled.

Deep soaking winter rains that trickled into spring provided a spectacular start to the growing season. The moist soils minimised the threat of frosts, followed with a mild spring at bud break made for a promising start to an incredible vintage. Despite its dryness, the growing season was relatively mild.

Warm days, cool nights and little to no disease pressure gave rise to fruit rich in flavour and naturally high acid, all with relatively modest sugar levels. The wines produced from 2022 will drink well young and many, if allowed, will cellar well to remind us of the great vintage. One of the best vintages in the recent decade.

About Tscharke Wines

The story of Tscharke is one of continued evolution, and today our brand is a beacon of contemporary Barossa winemaking and the highest standards of viticultural excellence.

The land that is today referred to as the Barossa has been owned by, and cared for, by the Peramangk, Ngadjuri and Kaurna nations since the beginning of time. The most sustainable and enduring culture on Earth was practiced here for thousands of generations, in perfect harmony with the environment. Our family, and our business, pay our sincere respects to the traditional owners of the land we farm today and we recognise that the traditional owners of this land have a continuing cultural connection here. We acknowledge their unceded sovereignty.

As genuinely sustainable farmers, we seek to act as custodians rather than owners, never taking for granted the opportunity and responsibility to care for this remarkable land. One of our great gifts is the geography of Marananga, where the elevation of the Western Ridge of the Barossa and the ancient soils combine to create a truly exceptional micro-climate. Six generations of our family have lived and worked here, and the seventh generation are currently growing up among the vines.

After completing his Bachelor of Agriculture Science in Viticulture/Oenology with honours in 2000, Damien began to develop his family vineyards to old European grape varietals new to Australian viticulture, believing these varieties would thrive in the terroir and microclimate of Marananga, with the area’s prehistoric soils and Mediterranean climate.

Tscharke Wines was founded in 2004, heralding a new tradition in Australian winemaking with contemporary wines based on alternative varietals.

Damien was the first producer of Montepulciano in Australia and was awarded the prestigious 2004 Peter Olson Fellowship for Innovation and Outstanding Performance in Agriculture for his work with alternative varietals. We have continued to expand the boundaries of contemporary winemaking in Australia since the earliest days of Tscharke Wines.

This culture of innovation and the pursuit of excellence has guided Tscharke since our earliest days.
