A beloved far northern Italian variety, that is dark, broody, bold & has plenty of personality.

A Northern Italian variety native to the Trentino Alto-Adige region. Since planting in 2000 at Wirrega Vineyard, Lagrein has adapted wonderfully to Mundulla’s warm but temperate climate. This region is further inland and north than our own vineyards, and it produces fruit with a rich flavour profile, plenty of natural acidity and finely tuned tannins.

The winemaking brief was to respect and enhance the natural characteristics of this variety, so we kept it simple. Fermentation on skins for 12 days was followed with maturation in a combination of new and old, predominately French oak for the final blend.

Cooling alpine herbs and eucalypt aromas tease you into a sense of choc-mint highlights. A generous front-palate of fleshy boysenberry is supple, as those eagerly anticipated savoury tannins creep in. These tannins are finely tuned & grainy, reminiscing of black-tea to finish long with a cardamom linger. There is just enough acidity to a bright finish, that you will eagerly reach for another sip.

About Wangolina Wines

Anita has been a ‘part of the fabric’ at Wangolina since inception, working in every facet of the family business. Graduating with an Oenology degree at Adelaide University in 2001, she went on to work consecutive vintages overseas and within Australia to broaden her knowledge, exposure and experience before returning to her home in Mt Benson. Taking the reins as sole Owner/ Director in 2013, she has continued to evolve the Wangolina range and vineyard plantings to capitalise on the cool climate regionality and coastal capabilities of Mt Benson.

Our vineyard is situated in the “Hundred of Mt Benson” as they used to say, on Limestone Coast Road, Mt Benson. Established in 1999 by John & Anita Goode with plantings of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon & Sauvignon Blanc, the vineyard has now expanded to include Pinot Gris, Grüner Veltliner and Malvasia Istriana (which is super exciting).

The sandy loam over limestone soils provide the ideal soil condition for vine growth, plentiful supplies of fresh subterranean water (which filters through the limestone) and the temperate climate, which is moderated by the influence of the Great Southern Ocean, all providing excellent conditions for vineyards to thrive and produce high quality wines. Our vineyard is located approximately 12kms as the bird flies from the sea at Cape Jaffa.
