This wine is named after this Schlossberg lieu-dit’s cadastral name, Au Château. The building referenced in the name is the iconic Château de Kaysersberg, pictured at the top of this offer, whose ruins preside over the town and lie a stone’s throw from the western boundary of the Schlossberg Grand Cru.

With precious few bottles, we have yet to taste this release. However, Eddy Faller explains that the granitic soils give this bottling a more linear and ‘smoky’ mineral style compared to the rounder, more supple limestone-grown Altenbourg.

Cropped from steeply terraced, pre-clonal era 1960s vines, it was fermented with 20% bunches and aged for two years in Burgundian barrels (20% new); Pigott’s note below reflects a terrific year for Alsace Pinot and the great strides Weinbach has made under the current generation.

About Domaine Weinbach

Domaine Weinbach is an icon of the Alsace wine region, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture and winemaking, and producer of some of the world’s greatest aromatic wines.

Located the foot of the majestic Schlossberg hill, Domaine Weinbach is a “stream of wine”, named after the small waterway that traverses the property, and dates back all the way to 1612 when it was established by Capuchin monks.

The Faller family farms 27 hectares of vineyards, much of which is Grand Cru. The fame may go to the imposing Schlossberg GC but equal renown should be extended to the walled Clos de Capucins that surrounds the winery and the Furstentum GC, celebrated for exceptional Gewurztraminer.

Viticulture has been organic for many years but a conversion to biodynamics culminated in certification for the 2006 vintage onwards.

“Domaine Weinbach is an iconic domaine in Alsace. The wines are amongst the most elegant and poised in Alsace. They are paradigms of varietal expression and age effortlessly. In a way, Domaine Weinbach is the guardian of the Schlossberg and its incisive Rieslings.” Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
