Biodynamic in conversion. Weinbach’s striking skin contact release is drawn from a parcel of vines in the Vogelgarten vineyard (the bird’s garden) between the Grand Crus of Furstentum and Mambourg. It’s a blend of 70% Gewürztraminer and 30% Pinot Gris from an east-facing incline of marl and limestone.

Here, the steep slope optimises exposure to the sun, producing the kind of opulent Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris—with great aromatic complexity—that Eddy Faller felt would suit a skin contact style right down to the ground.

Following three weeks on skins with indigenous yeasts, it is aged for eight months on gross lees in foudre. There were no added sulphites at any stage.

This is the third release, and it is undoubtedly the finest so far. The knockout aromas take in amaro, blood orange and orange rind, while the palate is potent and fleshy, with grapefruit and watermelon dovetailing with crunchy freshness and grippy phenolic pucker. All this flavour and texture tapers to a long, salty close. Boom!

About Domaine Weinbach

Domaine Weinbach is an icon of the Alsace wine region, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture and winemaking, and producer of some of the world’s greatest aromatic wines.

Located the foot of the majestic Schlossberg hill, Domaine Weinbach is a “stream of wine”, named after the small waterway that traverses the property, and dates back all the way to 1612 when it was established by Capuchin monks.

The Faller family farms 27 hectares of vineyards, much of which is Grand Cru. The fame may go to the imposing Schlossberg GC but equal renown should be extended to the walled Clos de Capucins that surrounds the winery and the Furstentum GC, celebrated for exceptional Gewurztraminer.

Viticulture has been organic for many years but a conversion to biodynamics culminated in certification for the 2006 vintage onwards.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
