In 2014 we were harvesting grenache for rosé from our 2001 estate plantings. 3 days after the pick, we noticed an entire row (row 17) was still hanging. My Dad of course denied responsibility, claiming to have never missed a row in 45 years of viticulture.

He clearly needed glasses! We decided to hand pick the remaining row of fruit direct to barrel and footstomped in the vineyard. Years down the track, we don’t deliberately miss a row, but we do incorporate that whole bunch component that adds a distinct rose petal lift to this wine.

This is the 3rd time we have had the opportunity to purchase fruit from Steve and Tracey Koch. This beautiful single vineyard heading towards Lyndoch was planted in 1976. The west-facing slope has quite a bit of red loam soil on top of limestone, giving the fruit great complexity. Spur pruned on permanent arms.

About Whistler Wines

Grape growing has been part of the Pfeiffer family way of life for four generations, beginning with Albert Heinrich Pfeiffer, who owned a vineyard in the Riverland region of South Australia. Albert would spend many hours in the vines with his son Hubert, working the vineyard in bare feet with his faithful Clydesdale, Bloss, before harvesting the grapes and selling them to local producers.

In 2000, Whistler Wines gained recognition after winning multiple awards including “Best White Wine in Show” for the 2000 Estate Semillon at the Barossa Wine Show and “World’s Top 10 Shiraz” for the 2006 Estate Shiraz from Winestate Awards in 2009.

In 2020, Whistler Wines was named “Best Small Cellar Door” in the Barossa Valley by GT Wine Magazine. Martin & Sally retire as son Sam Pfeiffer takes on the business.
