Our stunning 2022 Pinot Noir is announced by complex, intense aromatics on the nose, with a “Black” fruit spectrum of Cherries, Plums and underlying complex oak characters.

The velvety palate displays luscious sweet and sour dark cherries, with underlying savoury aromatics and a beautiful long and light to medium weight finish. This has all been derived from a cool, mild and easy growing season, perfect for Burgundian varieties in the Albany region.

Must was cold macerated at 8 degrees for 72 hours pre fermentation, allowing the fruit to express soft tannins and strong black colours, fermented in numerous small fermentation vessels with various yeast strains to extract as much terroir from individual rows. Reasonably high temperatures were allowed (30 degrees) through the later stages of ferment, along with a limited amount of time with post ferment maceration.

The wine was transferred to new and used French oak barrels for Malo lactic fermentation, before being allowed to age and settle for ten months with various oaks, and on lees for complexity.

REVIEWS
One of the best pinots Wignalls have released in their decorated life. It combines the lifted perfumed aromatics with a firm core in the palate that provides a sturdy direction and poise. Aromas of dark cherry, spices and a trace of truffle oil. The palate though is a serious statement of this variety. The firm core of chalky tannin and fine grained oak provides lift and length with total control. Plenty of time in the cellar. 96 points, Ray Jordan Wines

About Wignalls Wines

Wignalls Wines was established on the outskirts of the then Town of Albany in 1982, after extensive research and investigations into “Terroir” (Environmental factors creating wine quality) by our founder Dr Bill Wignall.

Climatology results from the nearby weather bureaux at Albany’s airport, showed Albany’s growing conditions in Spring and Summer were virtually identical to the famous wine growing region of Burgundy in central France, thus it was decided to experiment with Burgundian varieties such as the then unknown Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc – all well known in Australia today!

First vintages saw amazing results with Trophies and Gold medals for both Pinot and Chardonnay, and subsequently over sixty Trophies and Gold’s have been won by our family estate to date, both Domestically and more importantly Internationally.

A unique rustic cellar door was constructed in 2006 on site out of an abandoned hay shed, featuring local rock and rough sawn Jarrah timbers, as an older winery should portray its heritage. 2004 saw Wignalls cellar door Benchmarked by the “Winemakers Federation of Australia” as one of the best 25 cellar doors in Australia, a huge achievement for Dr Wignalls foresight of going against the grain in WA and making our cellar to look old and quaint, built out of local solid stone that the vineyard thrives in. It is usual for WA cellar doors to be ultra-modern with large areas of glass and stainless steel!

The winery now based on the outskirts of the bustling City Of Albany, was passed onto the second generation of winemakers with Bill’s son Rob, and Daughter in law Claire, in 2004 for the next evolution in Western Australian winemaking. With renewed emphasis on Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the main varieties are our vision, all expressing their individual terroir styles from arguably Western Australia’s most southerly based vineyard.

Along with our “Super Premium” wine styles, Wignalls also produces “every day” styles for your enjoyment, such as Unwooded Chardonnay and Cabernet Merlot, along with favourites such as a Rose` and Port available through our cellar door 7 days a week.

Partners in Wine WA

Kirk and Rebecca welcome you as a Partner in Wine! We are a couple of West Australians who met over a bottle of wine, and whose love developed like a full-bodied red. Before long we found our weekends planned around West Australia’s diverse wine regions in an attempt to uncover smaller, niche wineries and the hidden gems amongst their delectable wine creations.

Like you, we appreciate good times and great wine – enjoyed with friends and loved ones – and our journey has taken us through each of the beautiful wine regions of this great state, sampling thousands of wines along the way.

Many WA wines are highly rated by the likes of James Halliday – Australian wine critic, winemaker, and senior wine competition judge – and many prestigious national awards are bestowed on our state’s wine produce each year. WA’s wine is world renowned and highly sought after, but at the same time a large number of boutique wines are hard to come by in major stores, with the winemakers choosing to sell only through their cellar door.

We choose small, WA-only boutique wineries so that you can sample a special drop from our own backyard. Every wine we have tasted and personally endorse, so join us for a taste of WA. Let your winery trail begin – from the comfort of your own home!
