CABERNET SAUVIGNON | SHIRAZ 2016
The Caley is the pinnacle of a long winemaking journey of excellence, that rightfully honours Yalumba’s most adventurous son, Fred Caley Smith. A blend of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and Barossa Shiraz, The Caley is a classic marriage of two noble varieties and two great Australian wine regions.

Tasting Comments
Very deep, dense red. Typical Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon aromas: Bright florals, cherry, oyster shell, leafy stalks then into red currant. The palate reveals a very defined wine, cool and inviting. Medium to full depth with a densely layered structure and warmth delivering a prominent yet silky tannin profile.

Terroir & Site
The Caley 2016 has been sourced from three outstanding vineyards in the Coonawarra and Barossa regions including two Yalumba family estate sites.

Treatment
The Caley was matured for 21 months in 25% new Yalumba coopered French barriques, with the balance in 2 year and older French barriques. Once bottled on 2 May 2018, the wine was hidden away in our marble cellars for a further 36 months, and released on 1 June 2021.

About Yalumba

While the Barossa is our home, we draw on the varied climates and soil types across Australia to make wines grown in some of the country’s finest wine regions.

The Yalumba story started with Samuel Smith venturing across the seas from England to a small town called Angaston in South Australia. He founded Yalumba in 1849, planting the first vine under moonlight with his son, Sidney. His bold, pioneering spirit has passed through the generations, influencing each of Yalumba’s proprietors throughout the years; Sidney Smith, Walter Smith, and Wyndham Hill-Smith, all the way through to our fifth generations proprietor today, Robert Hill-Smith..

Robert led Yalumba into the modern era by cementing our reputation as an internationally-focused and innovative business within the Australian wine industry. He pioneered Viognier in Australia, established Australia’s First Families of Wine and launched Yalumba’s most prestigious wine — The Caley Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz, honouring his great uncle Fred Caley Smith. Robert’s family carries on the legacy set in place by Samuel Smith, continuing to experiment and showcase the best the Barossa has to offer.

Yalumba operates the Southern Hemisphere’s only fully operational Cooperage, crafting bespoke oak barrels that elevate the wines aged within them. Our Nursery is a global leader in wine innovation, growing, evaluating and supplying quality grape vines to the Australian wine industry.
