From a site whose slopes are steeped in rich history, we source this Grenache from unirrigated bush vines planted in 1962 on the Hickinbotham Clarendon vineyard.

Its distinctive fruit is nurtured with a gentle wild fermentation and matured in grand ‘cocciopesto’ amphorae. Capturing a contrasting expression of detailed perfume and a loose knit weave of tannins.

A favourable growing season, with good winter rains, a mild flowering and fruit set period, with continued spring rainfall to ensure a healthy canopy. Yields showed good balance between vine vigor and moderate berry size. The ripening period that began late January was very cool, with some welcome rainfall in mid-February. The delayed harvest, with cold nights and mild sunny days, produced excellent fruit ripeness and intensity. The freshness and bright natural acidity of the fruit were a real feature.

WINEMAKING

Hand-picked from the Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard on the 23rd of March and selectively berry sorted. 100% destemmed, crushed and tipped into 1800 L ‘cocciopesto’ stone egg shaped amphoras. The fermentation occurred in the amphoras, a gentle maceration of only wetting the cap. 69% remained on skins in Amphora for 198 days. No pressings are used in this wine. Matured exclusively in the amphora for a total of 13 months. Bottled June 2022.

About Yangarra Wines

Yangarra has continued to evolve since 1862. The wines of Yangarra Estate have steadily gained respect and critical acclaim.

Starting our organic and biodynamic journey in 2008, Yangarra Estate has been certified biodynamic and organic with ‘Australian Certified Organic’ (ACO cert #11587) since 2012. Removing all synthetic herbicides, pesticides and fertilisers on our estate vineyard, we have observed and promoted a natural succession in soil and vine health.

Applying biodynamic preparations in our vineyard, we promote beneficial soil microbial biomass. We aid natural composting processes through mulching grasses under vine back into the soil, building organic matter.

Regular applications of preparation 500 (fermented cow manure buried in cow horns over winter) along with composted winery grape marc containing minor preparations 502-507 (Yarrow flower heads, chamomile flower, stinging nettle, oak bark, dandelion and valerian flowers) all promote a diverse soil microbiology in which our vines grow.

We apply preparation 501 as an atmospheric spray, made from ground quartz crystal which has been buried over summer in cow horns, aiding in light refraction and photosynthesis.

Grazing sheep through winter helps to control grasses throughout the vineyard, naturally fertilising soils and reducing compaction from tractors.
