96 Points – 2025 Halliday Wine Companion

Perfume is the signature of this wine with lifted violets, bramble and berry fruits. Refreshing fruit flavours include mulberries and blueberries.

Some nettle presents a cool leafy lift and clove spices dance with vibrant acidity and an elegant fruit drive. The Malbec component brings the acid crunch to the wine. A wine of wonderful fruit purity with some mocha warmth and fresh leather aromas.

Hand harvested, the Cabernet is berry sorted and the Malbec is bunch sorted. The Cabernet is destemmed, berry sorted and then crushed into the half-tonne open fermenters. A small amount of Cabernet (5%) was whole bunch fermented to bring extra lift and perfume to the wine. Malbec is destemmed to the small fermenters and hand plunged twice daily. Maturation in French Bordeaux shaped barrels; only 15% new oak to enhance the juicy fruit palate and immediate enjoyment. Blending immediately before bottling.

Vines: Fruit was sourced from the Agincourt block of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1995 and Malbec planted in 1990. The Agincourt block is one of the more sheltered blocks and the Cabernet clone is highly aromatic and lifted.

Cellaring: Crafted to be approachable when young it will also continue to evolve for a further 5 years or more under suitable cellaring conditions. The aromatics and accessible fruit palate make this a deliciously approachable young Cabernet blend.

About Yarra Yering

Yarra Yering is one of the oldest and most beautiful vineyards in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Established in 1969 by Dr Bailey Carrodus, the 1973 vintage saw production of the first vintage of Dry Red Wine No. 1 and Dry Red Wine No. 2. Yarra Yering quickly gained an international reputation for quality and individuality and paved the way for other Yarra Valley wineries.

Sarah Crowe, Winemaker / General Manager

Sarah began her wine career in 2001 when she joined Brokenwood in the Hunter Valley, initially working in the vineyard. After completing her first vintage in 2002, she enrolled in a Bachelor of Applied Science in Viticulture. The proceeding years saw her working international harvests from Oregon to the Rhone Valley.

Sarah joined Yarra Yering as Winemaker in late 2013, later going on to win the prestigious James Halliday Winemaker of the Year in 2017, and the Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year in 2021. Sarah plays an active role in the wine community, and is known for her generosity in helping others through her work at the Len Evans Tutorial Program and as a respected wine judge at high profile domestic and international shows.
