99 Points – 2025 Halliday Wine Companion

Red Wine of the Year, 2025 Halliday Wine Companion

“A brilliant crimson red. In fact, a brilliant Dry Red Wine No. 2. There’s a little reduction when first poured but it doesn’t take long for this to reveal a complex amalgam of red and black fruits, iodine, graphite and melted, dark licorice. Fleshier and more refined and seductive than last year’s version. Incredibly svelte tannins. Supremely balanced. I reckon Yarra Yering’s founder, Dr Bailey Carrodus, would be chuffed with this.” – 99 points, Philip Rich

Fruit was hand-picked, transferred across a sorting table and destemmed directly to the Yarra Yering half-tonne open-fermenters. As much whole berry as possible is retained to encourage perfume. A small portion of fermenters had frozen Viognier skins; tiny yields this year, added to the bottom. A few more enjoy the inclusion of Marsanne bunches. The wine was aged for 15 months in French oak barriques, 25% new before blending and bottling.

Vines: Original 1969 plantings of Shiraz & Marsanne, with additional Shiraz planted across the 1990’s. The Mataro and Viognier are drawn from vines planted from 1984 to 1995.

Cellaring: This fragrant style is approachable as a young wine but with some bottle maturation will evolve into a beautifully complex wine. This blend has a track record thus it will continue to evolve for a further 20+ years under suitable cellaring conditions should you want to cellar it for an extended period, although medium-term cellaring also brings rewards.

About Yarra Yering

Yarra Yering is one of the oldest and most beautiful vineyards in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Established in 1969 by Dr Bailey Carrodus, the 1973 vintage saw production of the first vintage of Dry Red Wine No. 1 and Dry Red Wine No. 2. Yarra Yering quickly gained an international reputation for quality and individuality and paved the way for other Yarra Valley wineries.

Sarah Crowe, Winemaker / General Manager

Sarah began her wine career in 2001 when she joined Brokenwood in the Hunter Valley, initially working in the vineyard. After completing her first vintage in 2002, she enrolled in a Bachelor of Applied Science in Viticulture. The proceeding years saw her working international harvests from Oregon to the Rhone Valley.

Sarah joined Yarra Yering as Winemaker in late 2013, later going on to win the prestigious James Halliday Winemaker of the Year in 2017, and the Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year in 2021. Sarah plays an active role in the wine community, and is known for her generosity in helping others through her work at the Len Evans Tutorial Program and as a respected wine judge at high profile domestic and international shows.
