Half the grapes for this 100% Garnacha were drawn from vineyards in the Sierra de Gredos in Navarredondilla and the other 50% are from vineyards in Peñafiel (Valladolid). The soil types include granitic rock, sand, clay and limestone, and they sit at altitudes between 700 and 920 metres in Peñafiel and a lofty 1100 metres in the Sierra de Gredos.

Grapes were harvested by hand and clusters were processed without crushing or destemming. Natural fermentation was in stainless steel tanks with daily pump-overs and no additions. The wine was then taken outside into the cold of winter to clarify and stabilise naturally. It was racked one last time before bottling.

About Maestro Tejero

Alfredo Maestro makes some seriously excellent, expressive, and inexpensive wines from his home in Ribera del Duero.

Defying the conventions and regulations of his region, Alfredo is a self-taught grape-grower and winemaker who learnt how to make wine straight out of a textbook. After a few years of seeing the wines made by classic methods, with adjustments and additives, he threw the textbook away and pursued a more unadulterated, natural way of making wine.

That proved to be a great decision with his wines find plenty of fans across the planet for their raw drinkability and irreverence. These are stripped back Spanish Garnacha with plenty of attitude.

Maestro’s strength revolves around revitalising ancient majuelos (tiny old-vine parcels) dotted through the highlands of Ribera del Duero and the mountains around Madrid. A prominent exponent of the natural movement in Spain, Maestro works far outside the confines of his vineyards’ D.O. legislation, meaning the wines are not labelled according to their region of origin.
