Soft, creamy style, some green melon, grapefruit tang, zestiness and a sense of old school, good school to it. Really nicely put together, lots of flavour, you can see that the trajectory will head into a butter, honeyed style, but right now is pretty raw in a way, but in good shape, just not quite at the tightest apex of a young wine (bottled just a few weeks ago, tasted today). I like its style. I like the generosity but vitality. It looks the goods in its vibe.
92 points. Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

This Balnaves Chardonnay from 2020 was grown in a season that was very cool with many challenges, but great natural acidities. Chardonnay fruit was hand picked on the 10th March from both our Old block and Avery block. Whole bunch pressed juice was barrel fermented on solids in new (22%) and seasoned Louis Latour burgundy barriques, with 50% being wild ferment and 50% AWRI 1375 yeast. Lees contact for 11 months preceded bottling in March 2021, 27 barriques of Chardonnay were produced from the 2020 vintage. – Jacinta Jenkins, Balnaves

Description

Balnaves wines are 100% Coonawarra, and produced exclusively from fruit grown by the Balnaves Family in Coonawarra.

Our aim is to produce consistently high quality wines from fruit sourced from our own Coonawarra vineyards, reflecting the unique flavours, character and quality of fruit grown in this area, as well as the variation of seasons in this cool climate area.

Our winemaking philosophy is to maximize and build complexity and structure in all the wines. Rather than focus on simple varietal fruit characters, the wines show complex fruit oak and tannin aromas, and rich yet fine palate structures, with noticeable texture as well as flavour on the finish.

Our wines are made to be aged and are best after several years of cellaring. The wines are best enjoyed with food, which highlights the mouthfeel qualities which our wines produce.

CellarHand is a fine-wine importer and wholesale distributor, with a portfolio featuring some of the most sought-after estates of Germany, Austria, France and Italy, as well some of the greatest producers from Australia and New Zealand. Our ethos has always been to build a portfolio as you’d construct the perfect wine list. We work with small, family producers who express the best of their regions. The wines we sell are the wines we enjoy, and the people who make them are like family to us. They are wines that taste of where they come from, and though they’re steeped in history and stamped with the signature of their terroir, they’re more than ever relevant – and desirable – to the Australian diner of today.
