Loose-knit on entry, then the oak to mineral seams stretch the stone fruit to white fig flavours across the palate on one hand, while corralling them into a creamy core of oatmeal, nougat and nutty nourishment on the other. This builds glass after glass, with the mineral quotient becoming more and more intense, the flavours more expansive. A top-barrel selection from the hillside block. 95 points. Ned Goodwin MW, Halliday Wine Companion

Fruit for Stefano Lubiana Collina Chardonnay is sourced entirely from the family-owned vineyard at Granton, 20km North of Hobart. The seasons become more defined the further south from the equator you are. Granton at 43 degrees south, is located inland on the shore of the Derwent River. This position offers important diurnal temperature range with some maritime influence, a unique combination that allows for a precise expression of terrior.

Ancient 200 million year old gravel/silt soils hold the key to vigour control and minerality expression in this wine. The north-facing slopes and dry growing conditions bring ripeness and flavour, while biodynamic management brings clarity and precision to the wine. Vine age and low rainfall build intensity and fruit richness. The vineyard’s multi-clonal plantings contribute to complexity.

Description

Stefano Lubiana Wines exude Tasmania in its purest form – from its soil to your family table.
Our environmentally holistic practices and care for our low-cropping Derwent River estate
follows through to the winery with minimal intervention meeting modern techniques. The
resulting wines are world class quality, to be enjoyed with hearty food and good company.

Tasmania’s first and only biodynamic vineyard

We are Tasmania’s first and only certified biodynamic vineyard, and have been cultivating our vines using biodynamic methods since 2010. This means that our wines are free of all synthetic treatments, additives and pesticides. Instead we travel the alternative path, stepping back in time and using cosmic rhythms to ensure soil regenereation as well as effective vine care through all phases of the year’s seasonal cycles.

These methods enhance our attention to detail in the vineyard and winery, as we’re more alert to the signals of Mother Nature and her messengers. Every season, we’re becoming more attuned to the synergies between our varied soil types, their organisms, the local flora and fauna, and of course our vines.

While we have a strong focus on sparkling wines as well as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, we love experimenting and exploring. Don’t be surprised if you visit the cellar door to find a Blaufränkisch or Malvasia (or maybe a nip of grappa) tucked away behind the tasting bench.

The wines we sell are the wines we enjoy, and the people who make them are like family to us. They are wines that taste of where they come from, and though they’re steeped in history and stamped with the signature of their terroir, they’re more than ever relevant – and desirable – to the Australian diner of today.
