Halliday 95 Points – Dave Brookes (February 2025) “Bright ruby with a lifted, instantly appealing nose of spiced red cherry, red plum and raspberry fruits. Hints of exotic spice, turned leaf litter, charcuterie, amaro, mushroom broth, crushed stone, dried citrus rind and wildflowers. There’s a concentration and fruit sweetness here that will win many a fan, but there is complexity and nuance, too, and I can see this being a real crowd-pleaser. It’s delicious.”

Bright, vibrant red in colour, the perfume of this wine is very complex with sweet ripe strawberry fruit characters, complemented with anise and cinnamon plum blossom spice. An elegant and supple wine that shows remarkable power, intensity and length on the palate. Framed by ripe, moderate tannin the graceful strawberry fruit is complemented but not dominated by spice. The wine demonstrates a wonderful poise and balance with remarkable length of flavour as all great Pinot Noirs should.

Winemaker’s Notes
The 2023 Vintage in Tasmania was not without its challenges, with vast differences in the behaviours of each of the sub-regions. A long and wet winter and following spring let to a slow ripening season with small yields. The Derwent and Coal River Valleys both experienced relatively cool and slow ripening seasons, producing excellent quality fruit that arrived very late in the season, picked at relatively high Baumes to manage the high acid retention. The outcome of this tricky season is bright and intensely concentrated wines with complex flavour, ripe structure and lovely mid palate weight.
Here at Bay of Fires Winery our philosophy on Pinot Noir production is to preserve to bottle the essential characteristics of the vineyard fruit and create the highest quality blend from subregional Tasmania. Gentle handling of the fruit and wine help to achieve this, while restrained winemaking assists in developing the complexity of the final blend. Several of the vineyards we source Pinot Noir from were planted for us at carefully selected sites. These are now developing in maturity, which translates to better balance and depth of flavour in our wines. The 2022 Bay of Fires Pinot Noir exemplifies this development showing richness and elegance that is so desirable from cool climate Tasmania.

About Bay of Fires Wines

The entire Bay of Fires team is focused on one singular passion – sharing Tasmania’s best wines with you. A variety of vineyards and varieties are chosen based on the search for unique personalities.

With consistency and quality in mind, the team crafts alluring Tasmanian wines. The wines are produced from hand-picked Tasmanian fruit, specially selected for quality and character. Each fruit parcel is kept separate so its unique essence can be captured at just the right time. After that, the fruit is allowed to let nature work its magic in the finest oak available. The alchemy of this winemaking practice is evident in every bottle.

Bay of Fires’ philosophy, in the vineyard and in the winery, is to ensure the varietal characteristics of our Tasmanian fruit are revealed, preserved and celebrated in every wine we create for you.

Bay of Fires’ Tasmanian terroir delivers outstanding fruit – our vines enjoy a cool, maritime climate that provides steady ripening conditions. However, with this climate comes the challenges of lower sunlight levels and a greater variation in terroir – the very complexities that encourage our determination.

Extraordinary challenges bring exceptional results. It’s no easy task growing vines in Tasmania – it requires lots of passion, hard work, commitment and knowledge. But when vineyards are nurtured with these four qualities, the result is truly remarkable fruit and the Bay of Fires wine range.

Just like the sub-regions of our island state, every vineyard has a unique and distinctive character forged out of its soil, its climate and, of course, its careful management.
