“…this blend of Sangiovese with some spicy, fragrant Beechworth Shiraz is exactly the kind of wine that will take Australia into the next phase of international acclaim.” Penguin Wine Guide

The harmony created by the marrying of Sangiovese and Syrah create a unique wine. The nose is of exotic spice; tar over black cherry, cedar wood and earthy extract with notes of fresh rich humus, turmeric, graphite, with beautiful red fruit. The palate is fine and long with an earthy, black-fruited impact and textural richness coming from the fine, beautifully chiselled tannins.

Overall it is dry and savoury with lovely earthy elements, deliciously rich, yet avoiding sweetness.

About Castagna Vineyard, Beechworth

The Castagna Vineyard is situated at an altitude of 500 metres five and a half kilometres outside the historic town of Beechworth in north-east Victoria, high in the foothills of the Australian Alps.

We make natural wines of terroir. Our intention is to make, as simply as possible, wine which is an expression of the place where it is grown. The wines of Castagna are multi-awarded and are at the forefront of the new Australia and are fully certified biodynamic.

Our soil mainly consists of decomposed granitic-loam with a predominance of quartz particles on a base of clay. Vines, through photosynthesis, convert air, light and heat from the ethereal into the material. Air, light heat – into – taste, colour aroma.
All estate-grown fruit is certified bio-dynamic
The vineyard is hand-pruned and the fruit is hand-picked

We crop at a little less than two tons per acre.

The winemaking is traditional using only indigenous yeast, and that, combined with minimal interference, is the key to achieving vitality and complexity.

Elevage varies between 18-20 months using only the very best, tight-grain French oak available.
