Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec

The 2019 Catena Alta Malbec transported me to the spirit of the 2016, both cool vintages. It’s a blend of grapes from different vineyards that were harvested at different times to ensure optimal natural acidity and moderate alcohol levels. Whole berries are hand-loaded into small-format fermentation bins and 225- to 500-liter barrels.

It shows precision and is clean, floral and really elegant, a little closed at first. The palate reveals a very fine thread, satin-like tannins and lively acidity with some blood orange hints. This is phenomenal.

About Bodega Catena Zapata

Nicola Cantena planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza in 1902 and today the estate is run by Nicholás Cantena and his daughter Laura. Malbec continues to be the estate’s focus and the winery’s pristine vineyards lie at the base of the Andes on soils of sand, lime and stone at altitudes between 920 and 1120 metres above sea level.

Over the last 20 years, the fastidious vineyard work of Nicholas and Laura has paid dividends and Catena Zapata is now one of Argentina’s most famous estates. Lush, beautifully crafted wines are what you can expect for Catena Zapata.

“Our family’s surprise and joy at receiving this unprecedented award of N°1 WORLD’S MOST ADMIRED WINE BRAND are mixed with worry and concern for friends, family and colleagues who are affected by COVID-19 all around the world. So we decided to take a moment and thank our brave staff, who has finished harvesting this week, and our friends and customers from around the world, because without you all, our winery would not be entering its 118th year of winemaking. In a series of virtual ZOOM toasts throughout the announcement day, April 1st, 2020, with friends and wine customers from the Americas to Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceania, we were able to feel the deep love and care that unites us, and which must be celebrated in good times and bad.”-
