A vibrant but dark red in the glass, with a decidely dark Cherry fruited nose with touches of earth and tar before sweeter oak is folded through.

From my tastings of many “Monte’s” from around the world and Australia, it is deemed a good alternative to Shiraz. A variety that is very late in ripening and is as tough as they come. I like to drink Monte and hence I have wanted to make one for a long time. The vineyard is in the northern side of the Adelaide Hills. It is on a tough piece of dirt and yet it seems to survive and even laugh at this. The grapes were slowly fermented and part of this batch was given extended time on skins. The result is a wine with great tannin structure suited to food with lingering fruit that opens up with air.

Patrick Erkel – 92 Wine Rating

A lush and deep red with some purple hues in the glass, the nose give rich and floral dark cherry / plum fruit with a thread of liquorice strap and leather. The palate is supple, full and transitions seamlessly between primary dark berry fruits and a tannin profile that gives structure that is underpinned by earth and graphite. There is a vanilla laced black cherry note on the mid before a return of a more savoury drying aspect to finish. A very good wine.

Halliday: 95 – “This deeply coloured wine takes no prisoners – simply because it doesn’t need to. It’s a cliche, I know, but this is an iron fist in a velvet glove. Its power doesn’t emanate from a high alcohol jab to the solar plexus or sock-it-to-them tannins, what it does have is some of all of those characteristics within a swathe of strangely comforting black and purple fruits.”

About Catlin Wines

Catlin Wines was founded in 2013 by winemaker Darryl Catlin, fulfilling a long held dream of making his own wine. Growing up in the Barossa Valley, Darryl picked bush vine Grenache in his parents’ vineyard for pocket money, which set the scene for a lifelong obsession with the wine industry. Various stints in wine retail fuelled the passion and led to eventual study in winemaking. Honing his skills over more than a decade at Shaw and Smith, Darryl developed an intricate knowledge of the Adelaide Hills wine region, and is now putting that to good use in creating his own unique style of wines.

In just a few short years, Catlin Wines has already established a strong reputation for high quality wines, with a number of trophies, medals and high ratings from well-respected wine writers. James Halliday named Catlin Wines as one of the “Top 10 Best New Wineries” in his 2016 Wine Companion

Catlin Wines started with just 4 varieties that first vintage, and has steadily increased its portfolio since then. Grapes are sourced from premium vineyards around the Adelaide Hills, as well as some small parcels from the Clare Valley. The wines are gently processed at the Winery in Nairne. With a preference for wild ferments and minimal intervention, each wine becomes an expression of the local terroir – the best representation of what can be achieved from that individual, selected vineyard.
