Margaret River

4 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2020

Fire Gully is what the French would call the second or sister wine of the iconic Pierro estate – whom own and operate this small boutique vineyard located in the heart of Margaret River’s renowned Wilyabrup sub-region. Fire Gully is in the vanguard of premier wineries in the region and consistently produces vibrant, fruit-driven wines of great elegance and style for drinking in the short term. Situated in Western Australia’s deep southwest at latitude 34°south, Wilyabrup boasts a pristine, virtually pollution-free environment and gentle Mediterranean-maritime climate, making the region ideal for the production of fine wines.

A family run vineyard with a focus on quality and value, the range is enjoyed throughout Australia and overseas, and offers quintessentially Margaret River red and white styles. Dr Michael Peterkin of Pierro winery purchased the nearby Fire Gully property in 1998, which is also one of the most beautiful and unique properties on the Cape.

Mike Peterkin believes that it will one day produce fruit rival to that of Pierro vineyard. That’s a big call but one that the quietly determined Michael Peterkin could just pull off. Since acquiring Fire Gully, the vineyard has been tidied up and all trellising has been changed to Scott Henry to give the fruit the maximum exposure to the sun. Like all the region’s best vineyards, Fire Gully vineyard is planted on what is known as Wilyabrup soil (gravely loam over friable clay with a significant component of loose granite rock).
