This vineyard is sourced exclusively from one 1853 Shiraz vine found in the middle of The Old Garden. Over many years we harvested the buds from this one Shiraz vine and grafted them onto roots growing at the winery.

So now we have one Hectare of an ancient pre-Phylloxera ‘Sélection Clonale’ exclusively from this1853 vine with its own unique flavour and tannin profile.

“Shiraz sourced exclusively from one 1853 shiraz vine in the middle of The Old Garden plot. Purple-splashed garnet in the glass with pristine fruit aromas of plum, blueberry and black cherry fruits, detailed and perfectly poised. Hints of baking spices, sage, bay leaf, olive tapenade, roasting venison, purple floral tones, mocha and earth. There’s a chimera of wintergreen way back in the aroma scape. Graceful, comfortingly oaked with excellent concentration and red-fruited intensity. Savoury and so elegant in its travel, tannins powdery and sedimentary, sour cherry acidity and a finish that sails on. Beautiful. 97 Points.” – Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

About Hewitson Wines

1853 was a great year, bringing us Vincent Van Gogh, potato chips, aspirin, Levi Strauss, Balfours, and the release of South Australia’s own currency– the Adelaide Pound.

Hewitson continues to release treasures from 1853 even today. An annual highlight is selecting the best barrels from both the Old Garden and Monopole Vineyards, wines made with exclusively 1853 provenance, to create the BARREL 1853 Shiraz Mourvèdre blend.
