Our vineyard lies peacefully nestled in the arms of its namesake, the 400-million-year-old granite massif; Mount Langi Ghiran. Over time, the forces of Mother Nature have cast rock fragments to the base of the mountain creating a formation we know as talus. The Talus range is an expression of the unique soils at Mount Langi Ghiran, reflecting our intimate knowledge of vine, soil and mountain. The 2018 Talus Shiraz showcases a distinctive minerality with silky tannins and pure fruit that combine to create a divine balance of power and elegance.

Black and red fruits with cocoa, pepper, spices and fragrant violet perfumes. Medium bodied, but with a fruit richness. Firm lingering tannins and our cool climate acid profile ensure this will become a timeless classic example of a Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz. Drink now until 2035.

A blend of some of the best parcels from the Mount Langi Ghiran property, 80% hand-picked, open fermented with 75% whole berries/25% whole bunches, matured for 18 months in French barriques (25% new), 600 dozen made. If you didn’t know otherwise, you might think red fruits have joined the black, or viognier or raspberries (wild or cultivated).

Only the second vintage of the Talus Shiraz, so quite a new wine from Langi here. I tasted it alongside their more expensive shiraz – the Mast and the Langi – and the Talus more than held its own. Right now, it was my pick with the others needing a couple more years to jump ahead. It has a delicious combination of raw, powerful yet understated fruits – dark cherry and blackberry with wafts of granite, white pepper and roasted meats giving a distinctly savoury feel. The palate displays more red fruits – cherry and cranberry plus meaty spice with sinewy tannins melting away before a seamless finish. It’s a beautifully composed and reserved Victorian Shiraz, delivering more alluring savoury nuances with time in the glass.

About Mount Langi Ghiran

Established in 1969, Mount Langi Ghiran – Aboriginal for home of the yellow tailed black cockatoo – is set amongst the dramatic backdrop of the Great Dividing Range in the Grampians region of Victoria, producing iconic cool climate wines.

One of the most beautiful vineyards in Australia, Mount Langi Ghiran is set against the backdrop of the rugged granite cliffs and spectacular mountain forests of the Great Dividing Range. The vineyard encapsulates an extraordinary sense of place and produces some of the finest Australian cool climate shiraz.

With 70 hectares under vine, the Mount Langi Ghiran vineyard is truly unique with the ‘Old Block’ producing one of Australia’s most distinctive and distinguished wines, the Langi Shiraz. Predominantly red grapes with Shiraz being the dominant variety, other varieties planted include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Barbera, Grenache, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay and Viognier.

The raw elements of climate, soil, and vine combine to create this unique vineyard which is one of the most isolated in Australia. The weathered granite cliff face and sedimentary soils, the cold prevailing winds forming off the Southern Ocean and the historic vinestock all play a critical role in producing the distinctive flavours of Mount Langi Ghiran wines.
