Trevor Mast was a legend of the Australian wine scene. Among his many accomplishments, he is most revered as a pioneer of cool climate Shiraz. The Mast Shiraz is our tribute to his memory, recognising his role in establishing the reputation of Mount Langi Ghiran. Thanks to his foresight, our vineyards showcase the ultimate expression of cool climate Shiraz.

Expansive palate with the red fruit character complimented by notes of black cherry, blackberry, cedar and cinnamon.

Fermentation method: Small open top fermenters. 50% Whole berry, 50% whole bunch. A mixture of plunging and pump-overs were used during fermentation. An average of 2-3 weeks total time on skins. Natural yeasts were used and once ferment was complete the wines were pressed to tank to settle overnight and then transferred to barrels to complete MLF.

96 Points > Halliday WIne Companion 2022
Pressed to tank, transferred to oak for mlf and 18 months’ maturation in French barriques (25% new). A vinous ode to the late, great innovative winemaker Trevor Mast, who promoted the kind of cool-climate shiraz we now so enjoy. This is all about the quality of the fruit, the light pepper and swirling spice, anise, wild raspberries, cassis. It moves with precision on the palate, elegant and supple.

96 Points > Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot, September 2021
The Mast Shiraz is a tribute to the late founder of Mount Langi Ghiran, Trevor Mast. The wines have changed a far bit since Trevor was at the helm but still retain their unique place in the history of Australian wine, with this particular example having a fair whack of whole bunch. It’s an opaque ruby colour before a seductive and tight core of dark fruits take over – blackberry, olive tapenade and dark chocolate with some spicy elements also coming through. It is a thoroughbred on the palate with muscular, dense dark fruits plus a sprinkling of mineral and spice, sweet oak also playing its part well. Firm and long yet immaculately balanced, it delivers both power and subtlety although needs some time to come out of its shell.

96 Points > Huon Hooke, The Real Review
Deep and very bright red/ purple colour, youthful and fresh, which also describes the whole wine. It has a spicy aroma with some pepper and balsamic herb high notes, while the palate is intense and medium to full-bodied, the fine grained tanning lingering throughout. It’s inbued with lovely freshness, which seems unrelated to acidity. Quietly powerful; a quite stunning Shiraz.

About Mount Langi Ghiran

Established in 1969, Mount Langi Ghiran – Aboriginal for home of the yellow tailed black cockatoo – is set amongst the dramatic backdrop of the Great Dividing Range in the Grampians region of Victoria, producing iconic cool climate wines.

One of the most beautiful vineyards in Australia, Mount Langi Ghiran is set against the backdrop of the rugged granite cliffs and spectacular mountain forests of the Great Dividing Range. The vineyard encapsulates an extraordinary sense of place and produces some of the finest Australian cool climate shiraz.

With 70 hectares under vine, the Mount Langi Ghiran vineyard is truly unique with the ‘Old Block’ producing one of Australia’s most distinctive and distinguished wines, the Langi Shiraz. Predominantly red grapes with Shiraz being the dominant variety, other varieties planted include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Barbera, Grenache, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay and Viognier.

The raw elements of climate, soil, and vine combine to create this unique vineyard which is one of the most isolated in Australia. The weathered granite cliff face and sedimentary soils, the cold prevailing winds forming off the Southern Ocean and the historic vinestock all play a critical role in producing the distinctive flavours of Mount Langi Ghiran wines.
