As in the Klosterberg site, the vines sit in the 30- to 50-year-old range. The name Turmberg—or ‘tower hill’—derives from the ruins of the last surviving tower of the former castle, Burg Scharfenstein (12th century), positioned dramatically atop the vineyard. The infamous German wine law of 1971 made this site part of the neighbouring Gräfenberg.

In 2005, Weil succeeded in having this 3.8-hectare monopole reinstated as an individual classified site in the vineyard register (historically, it had been a separate vineyard, reflecting the unique terroir). Interestingly, while Turmberg has the official right to be classified as Grosse Lage, Wilhelm Weil chooses to bottle an Erste Lage from this steep vineyard. “There is only one tip on a pyramid,” he explains, referring to the Gräfenberg.

“The white, yellow and red-fleshed peach aromas of this wine are very sensual, yet cool and precise. Very vibrant and focused with excellent concentration, the super-long finish is very linear and packed with wet stone character. So enormously refreshing.” 96 points, Stuart Pigott, jamessuckling

“The 2022 Riesling Kiedricher Turmberg Erste Lage was grown on mica schist with just 30 cm of topsoil in a lateral valley. It was made from very healthy grapes, with some skin contact, fermented spontaneously in Doppelstück and Stück and aged on fine lees. The nose is vivid with flickers of bergamot surrounding Reine Claude plums. The palate is immediately framed in citrus freshness. A zesty, aromatic allure combines greenish citrus with bright lemon. The palate has substance, but the citric notion is insistent, aromatic and mouthwatering. There is almost a flicker of mint in the background. The palate is concentrated, slender, bright, taut and straight-laced. There’s a lovely citrus finish. The 2022 is sophisticated, cool and serene.” 94 points, Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous

About Robert Weil

The vines on this steep, 4-hectare vineyard are now 30-50 years old. At 260 metres, it’s the highest of the three Weil hillside sites, yet thanks to its aspect and deeper, weathered-slate soils, it also produces the supplest and most forward of these wines.

The Weil team often uses the term ‘baroque’ when describing wines from Klosterberg, in reference to their overt exuberance. There are some similarities in character with the Kiedricher but there is much more intensity and drive on the finish. The first impression is of ripe nectarine and kernel spice with creamy generosity, but the finish is mineral, spicy, salty and racy. Outstanding, and one of the best examples of this wine we have shipped.

“Weil is widely seen as the jewel of Rheingau.” Jancis Robinson, Financial Times

“Robert Weil has been one of the icons of German wine culture for many years. Nothing but the finest Rieslings are produced. And as more than 100 years ago, the wines are distinguished in terms of their origins and their style.” Stephan Reinhardt, The Finest Wines of Germany
