About Shepherd’s Hut Wines

Shepherd’s Hut Wines is named after a 1850s stone hut found in ruins on an adjacent property. Built of beautiful honey-coloured Mt Barker stone, the hut was used by local shepherds as shelter while grazing their flocks along the Kalgan River. As we planted our first vines on the north facing slopes of our sheep and cattle farm, we rebuilt the hut. It now overlooks the vineyard, with spectacular sweeping views to both the Porongurup and Stirling Ranges.

Established in 1996, we are a family business that has always had a strong focus on quality over quantity. This philosophy applies to all facets of our business from growing the grapes through to marketing. We are proud of the wines we produce and the relationship we have with our customers. We hope to welcome you to the Shepherd’s Hut family.

Shepherd's Hut Wines

Shepherd’s Hut Wines is a boutique, family-owned winery located in the Porongurup region of Western Australia’s Great Southern, an area celebrated for its cool-climate wines and dramatic granite landscapes. The winery takes its name from a restored 1850s stone hut, originally used by local shepherds for shelter, which now stands as a symbol of the estate’s heritage and commitment to quality winemaking.

Established in 1996 by Dr. Michael Wishart, Shepherd’s Hut has always embraced a “quality over quantity” philosophy. The vineyard spans approximately 15–18 hectares, with most of its grapes sold to other respected producers in the region. The select fruit retained is expertly crafted into small-batch wines by acclaimed winemaker Rob Diletti, ensuring that each bottle reflects the unique terroir of Porongurup.

The winery’s portfolio features standout varietals including Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, and Pinot Noir. Their Riesling is especially highly regarded, consistently praised for its purity and vibrant acidity—a hallmark of the region’s cool nights and well-drained soils. The Pinot Noir offers bright cherry and berry notes with a refined structure, while the Chardonnay and Shiraz display both elegance and depth. These wines are known for delivering exceptional value and quality, earning accolades from critics and wine lovers alike.

Now in its third generation, Shepherd’s Hut remains a true family operation. Laura Wishart, the current viticulturalist, plays a key role in managing the vineyard and upholding the estate’s dedication to sustainable, hands-on grape growing. Her involvement ensures the continuation of the family’s legacy, blending tradition with a modern approach to viticulture.

Shepherd’s Hut Wines stands out for its authenticity, heritage, and unwavering pursuit of excellence, making it a must-try for anyone seeking the best of Western Australia’s cool-climate wines.
