A blend made famous in the Rhône Valley of France, Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro are blended to make a juicy, vibrant and fresh wine blend of medium body and clean tannin.

Whilst we have had Shiraz planted at Willow Bridge since 1997, Grenache and Mataro have been recent and exciting additions grafted in 2015. For the two cultivars, we chose sites on the vineyard which maximise heat exposure, giving the best opportunity to ripen and express full array of flavours.

Mataro is a late ripening variety, so the extended period on the vine is essential. Grenache is a prolific yielding variety requiring fruit thinning to achieve best balance of quality and tannin.

About Willow Bridge Estate

In 1997 The Dewar Family planted 100 acres of wine grapes – and held their breath. Then another 50 acres were planted in 1998, making Willow Bridge the biggest planting in what was then a largely unknown region.

The vineyard is sited high on the western watershed of the Darling Ranges, with the vines enjoying spectacular views over the coastal plain, and across the waters of Geographe Bay to Cape Naturaliste. The vineyard is 25km from the coast as the crow flies, and receives the cooling afternoon sea breeze during summer. At an elevation between 230 and 280 meters, the estate is generally two degrees or more cooler than the coastal plain, with ripening times similar to the cool southern parts of the neighbouring Margaret River wine region.

The 60 Ha of vineyards were established in 1997. Planting around two hills allowed us to match vine varieties to the choice of a full 360° of different aspects to the sun. The region is phylloxera free, so all vines were planted on their own roots and planting along the ridge line has minimised the risk from spring frosts.

Initial plantings of the classic French varieties of Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, have since been bolstered with small blocks of Viognier, Tempranillo. and Grenache. Bay to Cape Naturaliste.
