Lifted berry characters on the nose with notes of stone fruit and hints of crushed herbs. The palate is medium-weighted and very complex.

Crimson ruby hue. Complex aromas of red and blackberry fruit, stone fruit, and layered with dark spicy oak and hints of crushed herbs. The elegantly structured palate is of medium weight and displays flavours of blood plums, crushed blackberries and layers of savoury spice with Eden Valley herbals on show.  The taut acidity gives great structure and balance to the wine paving way for long and persistent grainy and dry tannins.

The Australian Old Vine Collection Eden Valley Shiraz celebrates the Barossa’s magnificent old vine resources. The region is home to what is believed to be the world’s oldest Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache vines growing on their own roots. Some of these vines remarkably date back to the 1840s. This is in part due to South Australia having strong biosecurity measures which has prevented the movement of Phylloxera – a potentially devasting vine aphid, which killed off much of Europe’s grapevines in the 1800s.

The Barossa has done much work to protect these ancient treasures, including forming its own Old Vine Charter. In 2009, the Barossa Old Vine Charter was instituted to register vineyards by age, so that older vines could be preserved, retained and promoted.

The Australian Old Vine Collection Eden Valley Shiraz was largely sourced from our Burkes Hill Vineyard, with the Shiraz being 62 years of age. The wine was vinified in small lot (0.5 – 1 tonne) open fermenters, with daily plunging or rack and return. It was matured for 18 months in new and matured French oak hogshead and puncheons.

About Gibson Wines

Gibson Wines was established in 1996 and draws on over 45 years of experience of its founder; viticulturist, geologist and winemaker, Rob Gibson.

Surrounding an 1850s Blacksmith’s cottage, Gibson’s home property in Light Pass – Northern Barossa – features a 7 – acre patch of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These vines are planted under the Gibson-Schulz trellis system, a unique method co-invented by Rob. The vines are alternately planted on a low and high cordon wire, the latter reaching nearly two metres in height.

Alongside these estate vineyards, relationships forged by Rob over four decades with multi-generational Barossa grape growing families, provides Gibson with enviable access to some of the region’s most precious fruit. Crossing all compass points of the region, Gibson’s grower relationships are key. Not only in providing a multitude of complexity in the end wines, but as a means of supporting a sustainable, integrated wine growing community.
